How to Apply for Australian Temporary Work Visa?

Australian temporary work visa (short stay activity)

Temporary Work – Short Stay Activity

What this visa lets you do?

This visa lets you:

+ Stay in Australia while your visa is valid (generally up to three months, but may allow up to six months in limited circumstance)

+ Bring your family with you to Australia if you included them in your visa application

+ Do the work or activity for which you were granted the visa, which will usually be either short-term, highly specialized,

+ Non-ongoing work or participation in non-ongoing cultural or social activities at the invitation of an Australian organization.

How many times you can enter Australia on this visa?

+ You might be allowed to enter only once. If so, you will need to apply for a new visa if you want to return to Australia again after you leave.

+ Alternatively you might be able to travel to and from Australia as many times as you want while your visa is valid. If you need to make a number of return visits during the stay period you must tell us in the visa application form, including the reason why you need to make the return visits to Australia.

+ Your visa will only be valid during the period of stay that you have been granted, and this will commence from the date of your first entry into Australia. Re-entering Australia does not start a new period of stay.

Applicants must indicate the Temporary Work stream that you are applying for:

+ Highly Specialized Work stream:

+ Invited Participant stream

     –   You can apply for this visa stream if you have been invited by an organization to participate in an event or events on a non-ongoing basis. You cannot accept any salary, wages or other remuneration for participating in the event, other than appearance fees, prize money, payment of expenses or payment from your overseas employer.

+ Australia’s Interest stream

     –   In very limited circumstances, this visa may be granted because to do so is in Australia’s interest. In these cases, the department needs to be satisfied that the activity identified in the visa application is of national significance.

If necessary, applicants will be assessed against all of the above streams and if eligible will be granted under the most appropriate stream.

Australia is a stable, democratic and culturally diverse nation with a highly skilled workforce and one of the strongest performing economies in the world.

With spectacular landscapes and a rich ancient culture, Australia is a land like no other. It is the earth’s sixth-largest country in land area and is the only nation to govern an entire continent.

Australia: A snap - shot

WEATHER

Australia experiences temperate weather for most of the year but the climate can vary due to the size of our continent. The northern states typically experience warm weather much of the time, with the southern states experiencing cooler winters. Australia is also one of the driest continents on earth with an average annual rainfall of less than 600 millimetres. Like all countries in the southern hemisphere, Australia’s seasons are opposite to those in the northern hemisphere. December to February is summer; March to May is autumn; June to August is winter; and September to November is spring.

TIME ZONES IN AUSTRALIA

Australia is divided into three separate time zones: Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) covers the eastern states of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania & the Australian Capital Territory. AEST is equal to Coordinated Universal Time plus 10 hours (UTC +10). Australian Central Standard Time (ACST) covers the state of South Australia, the town of Broken Hill in western New South Wales and the Northern Territory. ACST is equal to Coordinated Universal Time plus 9½ hours (UTC +9½). Australian Western Standard Time (AWST) covers Western Australia. AWST is equal to Coordinated Universal Time plus 8 hours (UTC +8).

CURRENCY

Australia’s national currency is the Australian dollar which comes in denominations of $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 notes. Coins come in 5, 10, 20 and 50 cent and one and two dollar denominations.

CULTURE

Australia is home to one of the world’s oldest living cultures, with Aboriginal communities established nearly 60,000 years before European settlement. Today, Australia is one of the world’s most multicultural countries, rich in Indigenous and immigrant cultures. Australia is a successful and prosperous nation, ranked second in the United Nations Development Programme’s Human Development Report 2014.

ECONOMY

Australia’s economy is consistently ranked among the strongest of advanced economies in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. It is the world’s twelfth largest economy and a top performing nation on almost every measure of excellence, from health to wealth, from ease of doing business to educational attainment.

With low unemployment, low inflation and a highly skilled workforce, and with strong links with the fastest-growing region in the world, the Indo-Pacific, Australia’s economy is set to prosper well into the future.

Australia is a nation of boundless opportunity in a country of endless potential—a nation that is ‘open for business’.

Australia’s foreign and trade policy promotes its security and long-term prosperity. It seeks to protect and advance its national interests in a rapidly changing environment, while supporting a stable global order. Australia has been integrally involved in global efforts to build peace and security for decades, just as it has in promoting global trade and investment liberalisation. Australia is a good international citizen, helping in times of crisis and supporting economic development in its region.

TOURISM

Sydney Harbour
Sydney Harbour

With a spectacular natural environment, high quality of life and great diversity, Australia is a sought after destination for international tourists. It has 10 per cent of the world’s biodiversity and a great number of its native plants and animals exist nowhere else on earth. From tropical rainforests in the north to the red deserts of the centre, from the snowfields of the south-east to the Australian Antarctic Territory, it is a vast and varied land. Australia has many World Heritage sites including the Great Barrier Reef, Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and the Sydney Opera House.

AUSTRALIA VISA EXEMPTION

Australia

Special purpose visa

A special purpose visa is a visa exemption given by operation of law to certain non-citizens in Australia to whom standard visa and immigration clearance arrangements do not apply. It effectively exempts certain persons from the normal processes for entry into Australia. These include members of the Royal Family and the members of the Royal party, guests of Government, SOFA forces members including civilian component members, Asia‑Pacific forces members, Commonwealth forces members, foreign armed forces dependents, foreign naval forces members, airline positioning crew members and airline crew members, eligible transit passengers, persons visiting Macquarie Island, eligible children born in Australia and Indonesian traditional fishermen visiting the Territory of Ashmore and Cartier Islands.

Transit without visa

Some travelers do not need a Transit visa (subclass 771) if they depart Australia by air within 8 hours of the scheduled time of their arrival, hold confirmed onward booking and documentation necessary to enter the country of their destination and remain in the transit lounge at an airport (i.e. they do not need to clear immigration in order to re-check their luggage).

Holders of the following passports can transit through Australia under this arrangement:

  • eVisitor eligible passports
  • ETA eligible passports
  • Citizens of these countries:
Argentina Nauru South Africa
Chile Oman Thailand
Fiji Palau Tonga
Indonesia Philippines Tuvalu
Kiribati Papua New Guinea United Arab Emirates
Marshall Islands Qatar Uruguay
Mexico Samoa Vanuatu
Micronesia Solomon Islands

  • Nationals of  Taiwan holding ordinary Taiwan passports (other than official or diplomatic passports).
  • Persons holding British passports (irrespective of endorsement in passport regarding national status).
  • Persons who hold diplomatic passports, except nationals of these countries: Afghanistan, Algeria, Angola, Bahrain, Comoros, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Madagascar, Mauritania, Morocco, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Taiwan, Tunisia, Yemen, Zimbabwe, and Arab Non-National Passport Holders (ANNPH).

A Transit visa is required for Gold Coast airport, and for Cairns airport and Sydney airport if staying overnight. Transit without a visa through Adelaide applies only to passengers departing on the same aircraft unless advance notice is given by the airline. In addition, those who need to leave the transit lounge for any reason must hold a valid Australian visa.
